The event shares Palestinian stories through cinema.
Film fans, it's time to come together. Cinema Akil is marking the 10th anniversary of Reel Palestine with a festival that aims to shine a spotlight on Palestine. Running from 26 January to 4 February, the event is committed to showcasing stories through cinema and offer an alternative view.
Reel Palestine 2024 is presented by Bayt, and supported by Bristol and Advanced Media. This year's festival draws inspiration from the Gaza City shield, which is a symbol of rebirth and renewal. The programme includes 12 films and documentaries, and 24 screenings. Plus, there are a range of masterclasses, workshops and a souk.
Reel Palestine 2024 opens with Farah Nabulsi's new film, The Teacher. The British Palestinian director is an Oscar nominee and BAFTA winner. The film is making its debut in the UAE, and will be followed by a Q&A session.
The screenings also include Lyd, directed by Rami Younis and Sarah Ema Friedland, which explores the past, present, and future of Palestine. Tomorrow's Freedom, directed by Georgia Scott and Sophia Scott, follows the imprisoned political leader Marwan Barghout. Bye Bye Tiberias, directed by Lina Soualem, is a documentary which tells the story of the Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass. Other screenings include Foragers, Here & Elsewhere, Slingshot Hip-Hop, Three Promises and We No Longer Prefer Mountains.
Reel Palestine 2024's masterclasses and workshops aim to offer unique insights into Palestinian stories. Acclaimed filmmaker, Nezar Andary, explores the relationship between film and propaganda. KAVE's offers workshops, which range from children's book readings to Palestinian embroidery. Haya's Kitchen will serve traditional Palestinian food, and the souk will be open on the weekends.
