Summer Classics brings together 100 years of film.
Lights, camera, summer. Summer Classics has returned to Cinema Akil. Running from 11 July to 25 September, the event brings together a selection of timeless films. Grab the popcorn, sit back, and enjoy the fun.
This year’s programme features 14 films spanning a century of cinema, from the silent magic of the 1920s to modern-day marvels. The aim is to share films that explore what it means to be human, delving into themes of identity, belonging and self-discovery.
If you’re a fan of old-school cinema, Summer Classics includes two silent-era gems from 1925: The Gold Rush and The Phantom of the Opera. The Gold Rush brings Charlie Chaplin’s iconic Little Tramp to life, while The Phantom of the Opera follows a haunting gothic figure in isolation beneath the Paris Opera House.
Money Order (Mandabi) transports viewers to the streets of Dakar and is the first film made in the Wolof language. Rebel Without a Cause, starring James Dean, captures the turmoil of teenage disillusionment, and La Haine offers a powerful portrayal of youth culture in 1990s France.
Dead Poets Society stars Robin Williams as a teacher whose passion transforms the lives of his students. Edward Scissorhands, featuring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, is a modern-day gothic fairy tale with a twist.
Love and connection unfold over time in the beautiful series Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, where two strangers meet and share a brief encounter that changes their lives. Plus, Memento delves into the complexities of memory with a narrative told in reverse.
