Get ready for some traditional Khaleeji food. Shalwa has opened in Dubai Mall and shines a light on dishes that have been handed down through generations. The concept has been created by the team behind the UAE homegrown restaurants, Parkers and SALT.

Shalwa aims to be a part of something bigger and prides itself on supporting the local community and suppliers. The plan is to celebrate the Khaleeji food, culture and heritage, all through the medium of the restaurant.

On Instagram, the Shalwa team shared: “Got a special dish that has been in the family for generations? A unique twist on a Khaleeji classic? We want to hear from you! But it’s more than just recipes – this is a platform for home businesses, local food suppliers and farmers to share their work and be a part of something bigger”.

Shalwa has been created by the Independent Food Co. The company prides itself on its range of concepts, which cover different cuisines. The restaurants also include Public, Somewhere and the upcoming Kumo. One of its most famous concepts is SALT, which was a social media sensation.

In 2014, Salt Camp started life as a food truck. The business was launched by Emirati entrepreneur Amal Al Marri and Saudi entrepreneur Deem AlBassam. The company are famed for harnessing social media to create a buzz, and fans would have to find its next location online. Plus, it has expanded across the GCC and had a pop-up in Riyadh.

Shalwa in Dubai is currently in the soft opening phase, and open weekdays from 9am to 11.30pm and weekends from 9am to 12.30pm.
