The restaurant blends Mexican and Spanish influences with an agave-led bar.

It’s time to say hola to a new restaurant in Dubai. The Mexican meets Spanish restaurant, Sobremesa, is coming to the city. Opening in Souk Al Bahar next month, the venue will serve modern gourmet cuisine, including meat, delicacies, and cocktails.

Sobremesa, which has no direct English translation, is a cherished Latin ritual describing the time spent talking and laughing after the plates have been cleared. The idea comes from the Spanish tradition of relaxing after a meal, and letting the conversation (and cocktails) flow freely. So, instead of being turned away once you’ve finished your food, you’ll be encouraged to stay and enjoy the venue’s tequila and mezcal-forward energy.

In the kitchen, Mexican chef Marco Ferreirа, a Le Cordon Bleu graduate with time in Hollywood dining rooms and Moscow’s cult favourites, leads the line. Tortillas are pressed in-house, a charcoal grill adds smoke and swagger, and fresh ingredients sit at the core of every plate. Expected signatures include a Truffled Quesadilla with Oaxaca cheese, mushrooms and avocado salsa, and a Duck Carnitas Taco layered with BBQ sauce, jalapeño aioli and pickled onion.

The bar, led by Beverage Director Irina Golubeva, is unapologetically agave-focused. The shelves feature mezcals, tequilas and Spanish Jerez, supported by a list of inventive cocktails. Highlights include the Mezcal Negroni Sorbet, which is icy and bittersweet, while the Electric Paloma brings fizz and a playful jolt.

Sobremesa has been designed by the award-winning architecture firm, Da Bureau. Spanning 200 square metres and 60 covers, the décor boasts a European aesthetic with charred wood sculptures that evoke fireside gatherings and a digital sun that glows overhead. Plus, it will have a terrace with a view of the water features in Souk Al Bahar.

Souk Al Bahar is a Middle Eastern-inspired marketplace which is home to a range of restaurants and bars. The indoor souk features venues overlooking the waterfront promenade, as well as alleyways lined with shops selling Arabic antiques, jewellery, and perfumes.

The opening date for Sobremesa is set for next monthe with the venue open daily from 6pm until late.
